Markets buzzing as gold price hits record high - 11 January 2008
The firmer gold price and Rand are set play a key role on local financial markets today
World markets are buzzing with gold mania today.
This after the gold price broke a new record high of $897 an ounce early this morning.
Although the precious metal has since retreated to just over $890 an ounce, the historic level has seen investors, big and small, smiling all the way to the bank here at home and abroad.
The gold price has been on a meteoric rise over the past few weeks driven by strong demand for gold from India and China and the US economic slowdown.
It is flirting with $900 an ounce for the first time ever. Alan Demby from the South African Gold Coin Exchange says everyone who has invested in gold coins over the last 20 years will be making a lot of money. Demby says investors who bought Kruger Rands 20 to 40 years ago are sitting on a "gold mine".
