Prince Charles Phillip Arthur George was born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948, the first son of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. He became heir apparent on the accession of the Queen in 1952 with the title Prince of Wales bestowed on him by the Queen in 1958. In 1969, when he was 21 years old, his Investiture took place at Caernarfon Castle.
In 2008 His Royal Highness will celebrate his 60th birthday on 14 November and, in his honour, the Royal Mint has stuck a commemorative crown piece. A new coin portrait of the Prince was commissioned from Ian Rank-Broadly FRBS whose likeness of the Queen has been in use on coins of the United Kingdom for the last decade. The artist was granted two sittings to complete his work and the result is a wonderfully realistic portrait of the Prince in his 60th year.
Like the Queen’s portrait on the obverse, the portrait of the Prince on the reverse is an exact profile – the classic coinage effigy. The famous motto of the Prince of Wales, ICH DIEN (‘I serve’), forms part of the inscription. Only 150 mnted.
