Ninety years ago World War I came to an end following the deaths of more than 20 million soldiers and civilians.
Those who gave up their lives have been honored annually across the British Commonwealth and the United States as well as here in South Africa on November 11, Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day.
This year, to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of the war, the South African Gold Coin Exchange is promoting a commemorative quarter-ounce gold coin.
A total of 1918 WWI coins, featuring a poppy flower in full colour on one side of the coin and a cross on the other side, have been minted in Perth to reflect the date of armistice.
In support of South Africa’s contribution to the war effort, SAGCE has donated a gold commemorative coin to David Gush, National Vice Chairman of the Member of the Tin Hats (Moths), to be applied toward the benefit of its members.
