WW1 Memorial Coin 90th Anniversary

Ninety years ago, 20 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives in the First World War that ended on 11 November 1918.

In remembrance of the “poppies”, only 200 special quarter-ounce gold coins have been brought into South Africa – increasing their rarity value.

In support of South Africa’s contribution to the war effort, SAGCE has donated a gold commemorative coin to David Gush, National Vice Chairman of the Member of the Tin Hats (Moths), to be applied toward the benefit of its members.

2009 OLYMPIC MEDALIST PRESENTED WITH RARE
     BEIJING COIN SET

Khotso Mokoena, South Africa’s Olympic silver medallist, was acknowledged for his achievement at a function in Sandton yesterday, when the South African Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) presented him with a limited edition Beijing Olympic gold and silver coin set.

The 23 year old’s silver medal for the long jump made him the country’s sole medallist at the games.

“It was an honour representing my country and I am grateful that my long hours of training and preparation were rewarded.  I will treasure this gift as an investment that I know will grow in value in the years ahead,” Mokoena said.

Taryn Harding, marketing manager at the SAGCE, congratulated Mokoena on his outstanding performance. She said it was a privilege for her group to have rewarded an athlete who had contributed so much to the country and would continue to do so in the future.

The Queen's 80th Birthday Collection
This collection comprises thirteen coins struck in .925 sterling silver. There are nine proof specimens of the circulating range of United Kingdom coins for 2006 and four silver Proof Maundy coins dated 2006. This set has an overall issue limit of 8,000.

The Queen celebrated her 80th birthday in 2006. To honour her remarkable life the Royal Mint has issued a special commemorative Crown which features ceremonial trumpets with banners as a salute to her Majesty by Danuta Solowiej-Wedderburn on the reverse and Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of The Queen on the obverse.

The Royal Maundy is an ancient ceremony which has its origin in the commandment Christ gave after washing the feet of his disciples on the day before Good Friday. The commandmet, or mandatum, 'that ye love one another' (John X111 34) is still recalled regularly by Christian churches throughout the world. It seems to have been the custom as early as the thirteenth century for members of the royal family to take part in Maundy ceremonies, to distribute money and gifts and wash the feet of the poor. It became custom of the sovereign to perform the ceremony. The event became known as the Royal Maundy.
Like all the Maundy coins issued throughout the Queen's reign, the four silver Maundy coins carry the Royal portrait by Mary Gillick which graced the Queen's first coins. Each depicts the denominational value within a wreath.
